Watch: Live Performance in Namibia

One of my goals for the past two years has been to challenge myself and perform music that I have never played before. In 2013, Christiane Ast, a pianist in Swakopmund, Namibia, gave me the score to Gaspar Cassadó’s transcription of Liebestraum by Franz Liszt. The transcription sat in my small music library for almost an entire year until about a month before I was to return to Swakopmund for the Musikwoche Festival. Then I thought to myself, “What am I going to perform at this year’s festival?” This is when I remembered the Liebestraum and thought that it would be a good fit for this type of music festival and decided to learn the music.

If you listen to this transcription by Cassadó you can still hear the original version very clearly but he has beautifully made the piece idiomatic for the cello. This version has actually turned out to be my favorite cello version of Liebestraum. So if there are cello players looking for a nice encore to round out a recital program, this is a very beautiful piece that isn’t heard very often.

I hope you enjoy my performance of this work.
